President

Lifelong Arts Marketer, Digital Changemaker, Cheerleader of the Smartest Team in Show Business, and Dance Devotee

Christopher Williams is an internationally respected leader in arts marketing and digital transformation, with more than 30 years of experience helping cultural organizations grow audiences and revenue in a rapidly changing landscape. His commitment to the arts began in southwest Missouri, where music became both a calling and a refuge. As a young saxophonist and later drum major, he discovered how leadership, energy, and belonging can transform a room. That belief has guided his career ever since: the arts thrive when people feel invited, seen, and eager to return.

Christopher began his professional journey at Southwest Missouri State University, now Missouri State University, where he was drawn to the opening of the Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts. What started as a student job in the box office became a formative education in how audiences behave and what they need. During the early shift from hard tickets to computerized ticketing systems, he discovered the power of audience segmentation and data. Understanding what patrons had attended in the past offered insight into what they might value in the future. As he moved into full-time roles including house manager, group sales coordinator, and ultimately Assistant Director of Marketing, he learned about customer experience the only way one really can, on the front lines speaking with patrons. Those conversations often revealed how unfamiliar many first-time attendees were with the language and customs of the arts. That insight shaped a lasting conviction that arts organizations must communicate in ways that welcome new audiences rather than unintentionally alienate them.

Christopher later moved to Miami to lead marketing at the historic Coconut Grove Playhouse. There he oversaw creative strategy, subscriptions, telemarketing, box office operations, and ticket sales. The experience deepened his understanding of the producing side of theater and the operational realities that determine an organization’s health. The experience sharpened his leadership perspective and taught him to ask the hard questions that sustain institutions: ambition must match resources, and financial fundamentals matter as much as artistic vision.

In 2005 Christopher moved to New York and became Director of Marketing at New York City Center. During a period of growth and transformation he led marketing strategy across both traditional and emerging digital channels while managing revenue and marketing budgets. He helped advance major programs including the venerable Encores! series and the Fall for Dance Festival. Fall for Dance in particular demonstrated the power of audience development when barriers to entry are removed. The festival consistently achieved its goals for attracting new audiences and helped create pathways for people across New York City to become dancegoers. During his tenure he also helped communicate the excitement surrounding City Center’s major renovation and reopening, connecting the restoration of the historic theater to the audience experience.

As smartphones and social platforms began reshaping society, Christopher recognized early that digital tools would shift power back to arts organizations by allowing them to tell their own stories directly to audiences. That insight led him to partner with digital strategist Erik Gensler, first as a client and then as a collaborator. In 2013 Christopher joined Capacity when it was a two-person firm. He helped grow the company into one of North America’s leading arts marketing consultancies. Today as President he partners with institutions across the performing and visual arts to help them navigate digital transformation, build sustainable audiences, and adopt new technologies. During his tenure the company transitioned to employee ownership by becoming an ESOP and expanded its international reach. Capacity serves approximately 300 arts and cultural organizations each year and produces the annual Boot Camp conference, which has convened arts marketers from around the world for more than fifteen years. Christopher helped expand the company’s podcast by appointing Monica Holt as host and shifting it to a weekly publishing schedule, helping it become a leading source of insight and conversation for professionals working at the intersection of arts, culture, and arts administration.

Christopher is a sought-after speaker and educator who has presented at national conferences including the Tessitura Learning & Community Conference, Art Museum Marketing Association, Opera America, Dance USA, and the League of American Orchestras. He has also guest lectured at universities including Yale, Columbia University, and his alma mater Missouri State University. His work focuses on helping organizations shift toward customer-first marketing and on exploring how artificial intelligence can act as a strategic partner and capacity multiplier for arts and culture teams.

Christopher lives in New York City and Kent, CT, with his husband, Carl Andress, a stage and film director who serves as Artistic Director of the Sharon Playhouse.
